Where Have They Gone

Where are the heros, where have they gone?
Have they exited stage left with Conte and Bonds?
Lance outraced cancer, only to de disgraced by doping inquiries,
And spectators have been replaced by investigators and grand juries.
The Ducks are no longer Mighty, their home the Honda Center, eschewing The pond.
How long before Lambeau is replaced Hostess field and bon-bons?

Sid the Kid tries to save hockey but gets repeatedly knocked out cold.
While the Buckeyes have never worn or won a souvenier that couldn't be sold.
In only one year Number Four ended the streak and his career.
And owners abandon cities leaving behind unsold tickets and tears.
Are they overshadowed by commissioners with unquestioned control,
Or collective bargaining leading to lockouts every decade or so?

No level of competition is immune, from the pros to Pop Warner.
Gamblers handing our cash rewards to ten year old top performers.
Athletic directors, AAU coaches, agents, and even parents,
Selling our would-be heros to the highest bidder for their talents.

Can we place our trust in you Mike Trout and Kevin Durant?
Or are we doomed to witness another Tiger at 2 a.m. in a Cadillac?
Will Aaron Rogers wear "the belt" and defend the Lombardi with pride?
Or should the escapades of Ben Roethlisberger be fresh in our minds?

Where are all of our heros, where have they gone?
